Japanese tourists have been ranked the most polite travelers in the world, while American tourists are considered the most generous when it comes to tipping and spending during vacations.
These findings come from a survey conducted by SafariBookings.com, involving 192 tour operators. They were asked to rate tourists across five categories: politeness, tipping, spending, adventurousness, and interest in food.
Most Polite Tourists
According to Euronews (Wednesday, September 2, 2026), in the “most polite tourists” category, Japan took the top spot with 21.1% of ratings. Norway followed with 10.6%, then Switzerland at 10.4%.
Canadian and American tourists came next. At the bottom of the ranking were Italian tourists, with only 1.3% of tour operators rating Italian tourists as the most polite.
That said, European tourists overall received positive ratings. One operator from Imara Tours Zanzibar said many guests from Europe showed strong curiosity about wildlife and conservation.
“Many of our guests from Europe are very interested in animal behavior and often ask detailed questions about the animals and conservation efforts. Their curiosity makes the safari experience really engaging,” the operator said.
Best Tippers
Meanwhile, American tourists topped the tipping category, earning 29.5% of all ratings, far ahead of Germany in second place with 13.1%.
Canada and Switzerland followed with 10% and 8.6%, respectively.
Biggest Spenders
American tourists were also recorded as the biggest spenders while traveling, earning 24% of ratings, while Germany and Canada tied for second place with 12.8% each.
Most Adventurous
In the “most adventurous” category, German tourists topped the list with 21.1%. France came in second with 17.8%, followed by the Netherlands at 11%.
India and the UK tied at 4.5% in this category, with Spain slightly below at 4.3%, suggesting tourists from these countries tend to lean toward more relaxed vacations.
Most Food-Focused
The food category told a different story. Indian tourists were found to be the most enthusiastic about traveling to try different foods, followed by Japan. France came in third with 12.4%, while China and the Netherlands rounded out the top five in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
