Want to visit a museum without getting bored halfway through? Tahir Solo Museum takes a slightly different approach. Visitors are guided through a journey spanning planets, dinosaurs, and future technology, all in a single visit.
Tahir Solo Museum is located on Jalan Ki Hajar Dewantara, Jebres District, Surakarta City. The museum’s location is also close to the campuses of Universitas Sebelas Maret and the Indonesian Institute of the Arts Surakarta.
Tahir Solo Museum’s Collections
From the main entrance, or lobby hall, travelers are immediately introduced to the world from its earliest stages. This includes an area on the universe, the evolution of life, and even a section on Gaudí and architectural art, all accessible to visitors.
The planetarium area is one section that introduces what the world and planets looked like before the journey continues into life from the past. In the next area, travelers can find collections and replicas related to ancient life.
One of the museum’s biggest draws is a genuine, giant-sized dinosaur fossil brought in from China. Beyond dinosaurs, the museum also houses a mammoth collection.
After exploring life from the past, the journey then moves toward the present-day world and technology. In this section, visitors will find collections such as a Hubble Telescope display and a replica of the Tiangong Space Station.
Much of the collection and exhibition concept is closely tied to China, since the museum’s curators worked in collaboration with partners from that country. Visitors can then head up to the second floor.
There, a rotating art exhibition space awaits. For the second-floor exhibition zone, the museum partners with the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design at Universitas Sebelas Maret. There’s also a library area used as an exhibition zone.
In this section, Tahir Solo Museum collaborates with the Indonesian Institute of the Arts Surakarta. For children, the museum experience doesn’t stop at simply viewing collections.
Tahir Museum also provides a STEM area as part of its future-focused concept. In the STEM zone, kids can take part in activities related to robots, drones, and technology and science more broadly. This concept is deliberately designed to make the museum feel more interactive, rather than just a place to look at displayed objects.
“So we want visitors to feel like they’re at a recreational park when they come here, we have interactive educators and all sorts of things that make our museum different from other museums,” said Darryl Yusuf, Operational Manager of Tahir Solo Museum, in an interview with detikTravel on Friday (August 28, 2026).
Facilities at Tahir Solo Museum
Tahir Solo Museum is considered a fairly new museum, having officially opened on July 25, 2026. The museum offers a cafeteria as a supporting facility, where travelers can find coffee vendors or simply sit and rest after exploring the museum grounds.
That said, dining facilities within the museum remain limited for now. A more complete restaurant and F&B area isn’t available yet and remains part of future development plans.
