A Flight Attendant Knelt and Apologized Repeatedly After an Accidental Food Cart Bump Here’s What Happened

Flight Attendant

Another in-flight dispute between a passenger and cabin crew has gone viral in China, this time aboard a China Eastern Airlines domestic flight.

The incident took place on Monday, September 28, aboard a China Eastern Airlines domestic flight from Hefei to Dalian. It began during the in-flight meal service, when a food cart being pushed through the aisle accidentally bumped the elbow of a sleeping passenger.

What Happened

The flight attendant, realizing what happened, immediately apologized to the passenger and brought him ice to help prevent bruising as a precautionary measure.

However, the passenger rejected the apology. Instead, he cursed at the flight attendant and demanded she accompany him to the hospital after landing, according to VN Express, reported Tuesday, October 6, 2026.

“Come here, I’ll kick you!” the man reportedly told the flight attendant.

The inexperienced flight attendant, feeling intimidated by the passenger’s behavior, knelt down two or three times while repeatedly apologizing.

A passenger named Zhang witnessed the incident. The situation only calmed down once the plane landed, at which point airport security personnel boarded the aircraft.

No Injuries Found

Beyond security, a medical team also boarded to examine the passenger. After examination, no external wounds or bruising were found, meaning no further medical treatment was necessary.

The passenger declined ground staff’s offer to go to the hospital and left the airport on his own.

Public Reaction

The incident quickly became a hot topic on Weibo and Sina, with many users condemning the passenger for what they viewed as a wildly excessive reaction to a minor, accidental bump.

How This Is Normally Handled

A senior flight attendant explained that unexpected incidents, such as a food cart accidentally bumping a passenger, are typically handled by cabin crew following standard procedure.

Flight attendants are expected to apologize directly. If the situation escalates, the senior cabin crew member steps in to handle it, with the authority to offer compensation to the passenger, including seat upgrades, mileage points, vouchers, or cash compensation.

If a passenger decides to escalate a formal complaint, the involved flight attendant’s performance evaluation score can potentially be affected, the senior attendant noted.

“That flight attendant knelt because she was inexperienced and panicked,” she wrote on Sina.

The Airline’s Response

On the same day, China Eastern Airlines issued a statement saying the employee involved experienced significant shock from the incident. The airline has since provided her with counseling support, and she has since returned to work. The airline states it’s still investigating the incident.

This incident is a sobering reminder of the pressure flight attendants can face when handling even minor, unintentional mishaps, and it’s drawn genuine public sympathy for the crew member involved.

For passengers, it’s worth remembering that cabin crew are trained to handle these situations professionally and that escalating minor incidents with aggression rarely leads anywhere productive, especially when, as in this case, no actual injury occurred.
