Indonesia Ranks Among the World’s Best Wildlife Travel Experiences : Here’s the Full List

Travel Experiences

Travel built around genuine, up-close encounters with wild animals has become one of the most sought-after experiences for modern travelers, and Indonesia has officially earned its place on the map for it.

From mountain gorillas to emperor penguins, a handful of destinations around the world offer wildlife encounters that simply can’t be replicated anywhere else. Travel company Bailey Robinson set out to rank the best of them, compiling a list of the 30 most compelling wildlife experiences on the planet through its Wildlife Experience Index.

How the Rankings Were Determined

The index evaluates each experience across six factors: animal rarity, location remoteness, conservation value, exclusivity, accessibility, and likelihood of an actual sighting. Each factor is scored out of a maximum of 10 points, with all six combined into a final score out of 100.

According to Euronews, mountain gorilla trekking in Rwanda or Uganda topped the list with a score of 90. This experience earned a perfect score for sighting likelihood, since travelers are accompanied by experienced guides trained to locate gorilla groups within their natural habitat.

In Rwanda, only 96 trekking permits are issued per day. Meanwhile, at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda, visitor numbers are capped at a maximum of eight people per day for each gorilla family that has grown accustomed to human presence.

Emperor penguin expeditions in Antarctica claimed second place with a score of 88.5, earning perfect marks for remoteness and exclusivity. Saiga antelope expeditions in Kazakhstan rounded out the top three with a score of 87. Notably, Asia and Africa dominate the top 10 list overall.

What Makes These Experiences So Special

“What stood out most to us was the connection between rarity and remoteness,” said Sarah Parker, Sales Director at Bailey Robinson.

According to her, the most exceptional wildlife encounters typically require travelers to journey further and venture deeper into the wilderness, meaning only a limited number of people ever get to experience them firsthand.

“For us, true luxury is the opportunity to experience something rare and meaningful, while traveling responsibly and supporting the regions and conservation projects that make these encounters possible in the first place,” she added.

Indonesia Lands Two Spots on the List

Two Indonesian destinations made the ranking: Javan rhino tracking in Ujung Kulon National Park, Banten, and orangutan habitat viewing in the forests of Kalimantan.

The World’s Top 10 Wildlife Travel Experiences (Wildlife Experience Index)

  1. Mountain gorilla trekking, Rwanda or Uganda, 90/100
  2. Emperor penguin expedition, Antarctica, 88.5/100
  3. Saiga antelope expedition, Kazakhstan, 87/100
  4. Snow leopard tracking, Ladakh or the Himalayas, 85.5/100
  5. Javan rhino tracking, Banten, Indonesia, 85/100

With two entries in the global top 10, Indonesia has firmly cemented itself as a serious destination for wildlife travel, not just a beach and culture getaway. Whether it’s tracking one of the rarest rhino species on Earth in Ujung Kulon or spotting orangutans in their natural Kalimantan habitat, these experiences offer exactly the kind of rare, conservation-driven travel that’s increasingly in demand among travelers seeking something beyond the ordinary.
